In a landmark event, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan released the Joint Doctrine for Amphibious Operations during the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) meeting on 9th September 2024 in New Delhi. This doctrine is a pivotal publication that will serve as a guide for commanders on the conduct of amphibious operations in today’s complex and evolving military environment.
The release of this doctrine marks a significant step towards strengthening the amphibious capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
These operations enable the forces to conduct a wide range of military activities in the Indian Ocean Region, both during wartime and peacetime. Amphibious operations are considered a critical component of multi-domain warfare, involving land, sea, and air, and are a prime example of the cohesion and integration required among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The doctrine underscores the importance of jointness and integration within the armed forces, emphasizing that successful amphibious operations rely on the seamless coordination and cooperation of all branches of the military. In particular, it outlines the strategic, operational, and tactical elements needed for effective amphibious operations, detailing best practices for planning, executing, and sustaining such missions.
General Chauhan highlighted that amphibious capabilities are not only vital for warfighting but also for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. The Indian Armed Forces, with their enhanced amphibious capabilities, can provide swift responses to natural disasters or humanitarian crises in the region, showcasing India’s commitment to regional stability and security.
The Joint Doctrine for Amphibious Operations is the second joint doctrine released this year, following the Joint Doctrine for Cyberspace Operations. Both doctrines reflect the ongoing focus on enhancing jointness and inter-service cooperation within the armed forces. They provide comprehensive frameworks for conducting operations that require a high degree of integration across multiple domains.
The development of this doctrine aligns with the broader goal of modernizing India’s military capabilities and improving its ability to respond effectively to security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. It reaffirms the commitment of the Indian Armed Forces to operate as a cohesive and integrated force capable of handling diverse operational scenarios.
Senior military officials, including the chiefs of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, were present at the release event.
