Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology Satish Sharma on Sunday emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, healthy living, sports culture and collective social responsibility for building a strong and drug-free Jammu and Kashmir. He was addressing students, teachers, parents and members of the school community during the annual prize distribution programme held at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Jammu-II.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and staff and was marked by a vibrant atmosphere of celebration and inspiration. The Minister congratulated the students who excelled in academics, sports and extracurricular activities and appreciated the efforts of teachers and parents in guiding young minds towards excellence and responsible citizenship.
Addressing the gathering, Satish Sharma highlighted the crucial role of educational institutions in shaping the future of society. He said that schools are not merely centers for academic learning but institutions where character, discipline, leadership and social values are nurtured among students. He observed that the development of responsible and morally strong citizens is essential for the progress of society and the nation.
Congratulating the award-winning students, the Minister said that success should not be measured only through awards and achievements but also through qualities such as integrity, perseverance, honesty and hard work. He encouraged students to remain focused on their goals and continue striving for excellence with dedication and determination.
Reflecting on his own experiences and personal journey, Satish Sharma shared that discipline, sacrifice and resilience are among the most valuable lessons in life. He said that real success is often built quietly through consistent effort, commitment and patience. He urged students to remain grounded and never lose sight of values while pursuing their ambitions.
The Minister also spoke at length about the importance of healthy living and balanced lifestyles among the younger generation. Expressing concern over the increasing consumption of processed and unhealthy food among youth, he advised students to adopt nutritious and natural food habits. He stressed that physical health and mental well-being are essential for personal development and national progress.
He remarked that a strong nation can only be built on the foundation of healthy citizens and said that the lifestyle choices made by young people today would shape the future strength and productivity of society. He urged parents and teachers to encourage healthy habits and greater awareness regarding fitness and nutrition. Highlighting the significance of sports and youth engagement, Satish Sharma strongly advocated greater participation in sports activities as an effective way to combat substance abuse and social evils. He stated that sports instill discipline, focus, confidence and teamwork among youth and provide them with a constructive path in life.
The Minister emphasized that sports grounds, classrooms and creative spaces should become centers of aspiration and positive energy for young people. He noted that children involved in sports develop resilience, determination and leadership qualities that help them face challenges with confidence and maturity.
He also praised the contribution of Scouts, Guides and youth development programmes in preparing responsible citizens and future leaders. According to the Minister, such initiatives help students develop commitment, discipline and a sense of service towards society.
Reiterating the government’s commitment towards youth welfare, Satish Sharma said that efforts are being made to expand opportunities for sports participation and constructive engagement across Jammu and Kashmir. He encouraged students to make full use of such opportunities and continue working hard to achieve their dreams.
