NEW DELHI, May 7
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that Operation Sindoor reflected India’s firm and decisive response against terrorism and reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security and sovereignty.
Marking the first anniversary of the military operation, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the courage, discipline, and professionalism of the Indian Armed Forces, stating that the operation demonstrated the nation’s determination to eliminate terrorism and destroy the ecosystem that supports it.
In a post on X, Modi said that even one year after the operation, India remains steadfast in its resolve to defeat terrorism and respond strongly to those attempting to threaten the country and its citizens.
“A year later, India remains as steadfast as ever in our resolve to defeat terrorism and destroy its enabling ecosystem,” the Prime Minister said.
Recalling the events surrounding the military action, Modi said that the Indian armed forces had displayed unparalleled courage, precision, and resolve during Operation Sindoor and had delivered a fitting response to those responsible for attacking innocent civilians in Pahalgam.
“A year ago, our armed forces displayed unparalleled courage, precision and resolve during Operation Sindoor. They gave a fitting response to those who dared to attack innocent Indians at Pahalgam. The entire nation salutes our forces for their valour,” he said.
The Prime Minister described Operation Sindoor as a symbol of India’s clear and uncompromising stand against terrorism and said the operation highlighted the preparedness and coordinated strength of the country’s defence forces.
“Operation Sindoor reflected India’s firm response against terrorism and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security. It also highlighted the professionalism, preparedness and coordinated strength of our armed forces,” Modi stated.
He further emphasised that the operation showcased the growing synergy and joint operational capability among India’s security forces. According to the Prime Minister, the mission also underlined the strength India has gained through its push for self-reliance in the defence sector.
“At the same time, it showcased the growing jointness among India’s security forces and underlined the strength that India’s quest for self-reliance in the defence sector has brought to our national security,” he added.
Operation Sindoor was launched between May 7 and May 10, 2025, by the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, and the Border Security Force along the western border. The operation targeted terrorist infrastructure, launch pads, military-linked facilities, and strategic installations located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The military campaign was carried out in retaliation for the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives after terrorists opened fire on civilians. The attack had shocked the nation and triggered widespread outrage across the country.
According to official reports, the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack were linked to Pakistan-based terror networks. The incident intensified calls for decisive action against cross-border terrorism and the infrastructure supporting such activities.
Following the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor as a calibrated and targeted military response aimed at dismantling terror camps and neutralising infrastructure used for planning and facilitating attacks against India.
Defence officials had described the operation as one of the most coordinated and strategically significant military responses in recent years. The mission involved precision strikes and extensive coordination among the Army, Air Force, Navy, intelligence agencies, and border forces.
The operation also highlighted India’s increasing reliance on indigenous defence technology and modern military capabilities developed under the government’s push for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” in the defence sector. Officials had noted that several indigenous systems, surveillance technologies, and advanced defence platforms played a key role during the operation.
Over the past year, Operation Sindoor has come to symbolise India’s evolving counter-terror strategy and its willingness to take strong and direct action against terrorism originating from across the border.
The anniversary of the operation was observed across different parts of the country with tributes to the armed forces and remembrance ceremonies for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. Political leaders, military veterans, social organisations, and citizens praised the armed forces for their courage and professionalism during the mission. Several programmes were organised to honour the soldiers who participated in the operation and to remember the civilians who lost their lives in the terror attack. Messages of solidarity and gratitude for the armed forces were shared widely across the country.
