Stock market ends in red, erasing previous gains

The stock market on Tuesday closed in the red, erasing all gains from the previous session, with the Nifty managing to close above the 24,000 mark.
At the close, the Sensex was down 251.61 points, or 0.33 per cent, at 77,017.79, and the Nifty was down 86.50 points, or 0.36 per cent, at 24,032.80.
Among the sectors, auto, FMCG, power, pharma, and telecom indices edged higher by around 0.5% each, while the realty index declined 1.4%, the consumer durables index down 1%, and the private banking index slipped 0.5%. On the Nifty, major laggards included Jio Financial Services, ICICI Bank, Coal India, Tech Mahindra, and Eternal, while gainers included Mahindra & Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Nestlé India, Bajaj Finserv, and Hindalco Industries.
Over 140 stocks touched their 52-week highs on the BSE, including Schneider Infra, HFCL, Adani Power, Emcure Pharmaceuticals, Adani Green Energy, Syrma SGS, Lloyds Metals, Adani Ports, Laurus Labs, Sai Life Sciences, and Ather Energy, among others.
Banking stocks weighed on sentiment, with the Nifty Bank dropping 331 points to close at 54,547.
The Indian rupee extended its losses for the fifth consecutive session, weakening to a fresh intraday record low of 95.43 per dollar.
The overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies remained largely stable at around Rs 467 lakh crore.
The Indian rupee closed weaker at 95.28 against the US dollar, compared with Monday’s close of 95.09.
Shares of Ambuja Cements Ltd fell 2.5 per cent in early trade, while Godrej Properties Ltd declined in early trade, falling 2.5 per cent. Shares of Emcure Pharmaceuticals declined 6 per cent.
