BJP J&K spokesperson and former Deputy Mayor, Advocate Purnima Sharma on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, accusing it of repeatedly derailing the long-pending Women’s Reservation Bill and betraying the aspirations of women across the country.
Addressing a press conference in Reasi, Sharma said that the people of India—especially women—are closely watching the political conduct of parties, and warned that “Congress will have to answer for its consistent obstruction.”
“The truth is now out in the open. Congress has, time and again, stalled women’s reservation under one pretext or another. Women of this country will not spare Congress for this betrayal,” she asserted.
Referring to the recent developments in Parliament, Sharma said that when the opportunity came to ensure 33% reservation for women, Congress once again chose political calculations over genuine empowerment. “For decades, they have spoken about women’s rights, but when it came to action, they failed miserably,” she said.
She added that this pattern of obstruction is not new, pointing out that earlier attempts to implement the bill also failed despite Congress being in power. “This reflects a consistent lack of political will and commitment toward women’s empowerment,” Sharma remarked.
Taking a dig at the party’s leadership legacy, she said that despite having leaders like Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi at the helm, Congress failed to ensure passage of the bill. “Their track record exposes their double standards,” she added.
Sharma further stated that during its years in power, Congress had ample opportunity to pass the bill but failed to deliver. “They hid behind coalition compulsions then, and today they hide behind technical excuses. This is nothing but deliberate obstruction,” she said.
Highlighting the BJP-led government’s efforts, Sharma said the passage of the women’s reservation law in 2023 marked a historic correction after decades of delay. “It is the BJP that has demonstrated real commitment to women’s empowerment, not just in words but through decisive action,” she said.
She accused Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, of misleading the public by claiming support for women’s reservation while acting against it in Parliament. “Their words and actions do not match. They are trying to confuse the nation,” she said.
“Women today are politically aware and decisive. They understand who stood with them and who blocked their rights. Congress will have to answer to every woman in this country,” Sharma added.
Concluding her address, she reiterated that the issue goes beyond politics. “This is about justice, dignity, and representation. Women will remember this betrayal, and the verdict will not just come in Parliament—it will come from the women of India,” she said.
