The NSS Unit of Dogra Degree College organised an enriching Guest Lecture on “Human Rights in the 21st Century” in observance of Human Rights Day. The programme aimed to enhance students’ awareness of human rights, constitutional guarantees, and the responsibilities that accompany these rights in a democratic society.
The session featured distinguished legal expert Adv. Anil Verma as the Guest Speaker. In his insightful address, he elaborated on the evolution of human rights at national and international levels, the need for human rights in contemporary society, and the scope and significance of Fundamental Rights under the Indian Constitution. He also addressed emerging concerns in the digital era, including privacy, cyber safety, and personal dignity.
Adv. Verma spoke at length about gender equality, child protection laws, and the role of democratic institutions in upholding justice. Emphasising the responsibility of citizens, he urged students to respect diversity, practice empathy, and raise their voice against injustice in any form. His interactive examples and real-life references encouraged participants to reflect on the practical relevance of human rights in daily life.
The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Ms. Amarpreet Kour, Lecturer (B.Com), who highlighted the importance of Human Rights Day and the college’s commitment to value-based education.As a gesture of respect, Ms. Simran Thakur, NSS Programme Officer, presented a sapling to Adv. Anil Verma symbolising growth and sustainability. This was followed by the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation by Mr. R.S. Katal, Member, Advisory Committee and Governing Body, Dogra Educational Trust, acknowledging the speaker’s contribution to legal awareness and social justice.Dr. Bela Thakur, principal DDC, also graced the occasion with her presence and support.
Adding depth to the programme, NSS volunteers from BA, BBA, and B.Com performed a compelling skit on human rights issues, portraying discrimination, inequality, and the importance of speaking up against violations. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Ms. Dristi Sharma, Physical Instructor, who expressed gratitude to the guest speaker, faculty members, student volunteers, and organisers for making the programme meaningful and impactful.
