In an inspiring initiative aimed at empowering women through sports, the Indian Army organized a Girls Archery and Shooting Competition at Doda under the aegis of Operation Sadbhawna. The event, held on November 9, 2025, marked a significant step towards encouraging sportsmanship, discipline, and confidence among young girls from Jammu and Kashmir’s rural heartlands.
The competition drew enthusiastic participation from talented girls across Doda and adjoining areas, who demonstrated remarkable skill and determination in both archery and shooting events. Designed as part of the Army’s ongoing civic action programmes, the event sought to identify and nurture budding sporting talent while fostering a culture of equality and empowerment. The opening ceremony was graced by Subedar Major Chain Singh, a distinguished Indian shooter and Silver Medalist at the 16th Asian Shooting Championship 2025. Addressing the gathering, he shared his personal experiences and encouraged participants to pursue their passion for sports with commitment and perseverance. He highlighted how sports build resilience, self-confidence, and leadership – qualities essential not only for athletes but for all young individuals aspiring to contribute positively to society. His words resonated deeply with the participants, many of whom were inspired to dream bigger and train harder.
Adding to the event’s significance, the final day featured a special interaction with Para Archer Sheetal Devi, an Olympian, Arjuna Awardee, and World Champion. Sheetal Devi’s incredible journey – from facing physical challenges to becoming one of India’s most celebrated para-athletes – left an indelible impression on the young competitors. She shared insights about mental strength, discipline, and perseverance, reminding the girls that determination and self-belief can overcome even the toughest obstacles. Her presence symbolized the limitless potential of women in sports and served as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes in the region.
Throughout the competition, the Indian Army ensured that the event reflected its broader mission of promoting national integration, inclusivity, and community engagement. The girls, dressed in colorful uniforms, participated with zeal and sportsmanship, cheering each other on and celebrating every milestone achieved.
