In a remarkable display of its unwavering dedication to the welfare of citizens in remote regions, the Indian Army organised a large-scale Medical Outreach Camp in the distant and underserved villages of Marhote and Surankote in Poonch district. The initiative was carried out as part of the Army’s nation-building efforts under Operation SADBHAVANA, a flagship program that promotes civil-military cooperation and humanitarian support in conflict-sensitive and geographically challenging areas.
The medical camp witnessed an overwhelming response from the local population, with over 550 residents availing themselves of the services provided. People from all walks of life – elderly citizens, women, and children – participated enthusiastically, reflecting both the urgent need for healthcare in the region and the deep trust the local communities place in the Indian Army. The camp was staffed by a dedicated team comprising Army Medical Officers, doctors from the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Marhote, trained paramedics, and support personnel. Together, they delivered free medical consultations, diagnostic services, and distribution of essential medicines, ensuring comprehensive healthcare support in areas where medical infrastructure is scarce.
Special attention was given to a wide range of medical specialties. Services in General Medicine addressed common ailments and chronic conditions. Pediatrics focused on children’s health, including nutrition, respiratory illnesses, and immunization awareness. Orthopedics services catered to musculoskeletal issues common among labor-intensive rural populations. Gynecological consultations were also provided, offering much-needed support to women who often face difficulty accessing specialized care due to societal and infrastructural limitations. This outreach effort is particularly significant given the geographical isolation and harsh terrain of these villages, which often restricts access to reliable healthcare. The Indian Army’s proactive involvement in bringing these services directly to the people helps fill critical gaps in the local health delivery system. Such initiatives demonstrate the Army’s commitment not just to national security but also to social responsibility and inclusive development.
The camp went beyond just medical aid – it reinforced the Army’s image as a people-centric, compassionate force that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with citizens during both times of need and peace. The interaction between the troops and the local community further strengthened the bond of trust, cooperation, and mutual respect, paving the way for a more secure and connected future in the border districts.
Local residents expressed heartfelt gratitude for the Indian Army’s efforts. Many noted that such camps are often the only opportunity they have to consult qualified doctors and receive medicines without the burden of travel or expenses. Their appreciation highlights the immense value of these outreach programs, not just as a source of medical relief, but as a lifeline in otherwise neglected regions.
