
Organises Plantation Drive & Online Quiz Competition on Environment

BARI BRAHMANA: The NCC Unit of Dogra Degree College in collaboration with the Eco-Warrior Club DDC organized the plantation drive at Dogra Degree College on Environment to celebrate the World Environment Day 2024.
The first programme was the plantation drive which was organized in the premises of Dogra Degree College, Bari Brahmana where the NCC Cadets of Dogra Degree College and Eco-Warriors of Eco-Warrior Club, DDC jointly planted the saplings of more than 50 local trees to add more greenery with the local flora to the environment which is decreasing day-by-day due to the cruel activities of human beings such as Deforestation, Environmental pollution and other life threatening activities on this planet earth.
The NCC Cadets and Eco-Warriors planted the saplings of the local flora to conserve the local species of plants of Jammu & Kashmir. The varieties of local plants which was selected to be planted in the campus were; Melia indica (Dhrenk, also called as Pride of India), Terminalia bellirica (Bedha), Terminalia arjuna (Arjun Tree), Syzigium cumini (Jamun), Delbergia sisoo (Shisham, Talli), Delonix regia (Gulmohar), Casia fistula (Amaltas, the Golden Shower Tree), Moringa oleofera (Sehjan, Drum Stick Tree), Bauhinia purpurea (Kachnar), Phylanthus emblica (Amla), Tectona grandis (Sagwan, Teak), Toona ciliate (Tunu), Mangifera indica (Mango), Platanus orientalis (Chinar), Albizia lebbeck (Sirin), Pinus roxburghi (Chir, Pine tree), Moris alba (Toot) and other local varieties of plants.
The teaching and non – teaching staff of Dogra Degree College also participated in the plantation drive. The whole programme was conducted under the able supervision of Gulshan Sharma, CTO/ANO NCC and Mr. Ravinder Kumar Rao, Assistant Professor of English & Member, NCC Committee, Dogra Degree College. In the second activity, the NSS Unit of Dogra Degree College, under the guidance of Principal Dr. Bela Thakur, organized an online quiz competition. The event was coordinated by Ms. Simran Thakur, Assistant Professor, History and Member, NSS Unit DDC, aimed to enhance awareness and understanding of environmental issues among students. The theme for this year was “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”. The online quiz competition was conducted through a digital platform. The quiz comprised 10 questions, covering various aspects of the theme, including the causes and impacts of desertification, methods of land restoration, and strategies to enhance drought resilience. The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 50 students across different departments. The teaching and non teaching staff too participated in the quiz. Participants were required to register online, and the quiz was made accessible for a specified time frame on World Environment Day.
All participants received participation certificates as a token of appreciation for their involvement and commitment to environmental awareness. The online quiz competition organized by the NSS Unit of Dogra Degree College was a resounding success. It effectively engaged students in meaningful learning about critical environmental issues. By focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, the event not only raised awareness but also inspired students to contribute positively to environmental conservation efforts. Dr. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary, Dogra Educational Trust was the Chief Guest of the function. He congratulated the NCC Cadets, Eco-Warriors and NSS Volunteers of Dogra Degree College on the occasion of World Environment day. He appreciated the spirit of the NCC Cadets, Eco- Warriors and NSS Volunteers for having a soft corner for the Plants, Nature and Environment and have the vision of making our planet green, clean and better for our survival which has come to the verge of death due to the immoral and cruel activities such as deforestation etc which the humans are doing on the name of development.
Dr. Samar Dev also appreciated the initiative taken by Principal, Dogra Degree College and the faculty members for organizing such events to celebrate the days like this related to the environment.
Dr. Bela Thakur, Principal, Dogra Degree College appreciated the NCC Unit, NSS Unit and the Eco Warriors Club for understanding this important social responsibility of planting tree for the healing of our planet which is suffering hard times due to our immoral acts. The whole programme was conducted under the able supervision of Principal, Dogra Degree College.
