The students of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Jammu, gained insights into the newspaper printing process during a visit to the Amar Ujala printing office in Bari Brahmana, Jammu. Students from the Digital Media, Journalism (English), and Journalism (Hindi) programs were welcomed by Baljeet Kumar, the head of administration, and Vijay Kumar, the IT head of Amar Ujala.
During the visit, the students watched a video that detailed each step involved in the creation of a newspaper.
The video explained how the news team plans and gathers information, designs the layout using specialized software called QuarkXpress, and employs advanced technology like Computer to Plate (CTP) to add color to the pages. They also learned about the processes of printing, cutting, bundling, and delivering the final product to readers.
The video narrated the journey of Amar Ujala, which started in Agra with just six thousand readers and has now expanded to reach over four crore readers through print and digital platforms.
The students observed the use of machines such as wave offset and monotype for printing. Additionally, the video emphasized the eco-friendly practices adopted by the company, including the use of fewer chemicals during production. Neelam Singh, the CTP operator, demonstrated how the CTP machine works and explained how to adjust color levels before printing. The students also witnessed a live demonstration of the printing process, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of how newspapers are produced.
This visit offered the students valuable insights into the entire newspaper creation process, from planning to delivery. The trip was organized by Dr. Dilip Kumar, Regional Director of IIMC Jammu, and was smoothly coordinated on-site by Academic Associates Mr. Gulshan Kumar, Mr. Rajeev Kumar, and Mr. Madhusudan, representing the Journalism (Hindi), Journalism (English), and Digital Media programs, respectively.
