Dispur, 6 July : As many as 52 people have lost their lives due to the floods in Assam, with six more people losing their lives on Thursday, the state disaster management authority said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Friday asserted that the flood situation has improved with water levels going down. “However, areas where embankments have been breached continue to be impacted by the floods,” Sarma told reporters in Dibrugarh.
Sarma inspected the inundated areas of Dibrugarh and spoke to experts and local residents on resolving the issue. On the issue of power cut, the CM stated that electricity has been cut as a safety concern amid waterlogging. He also added that they need to bring in smaller equipment to clean drains in the area. “There is also encroachment. We will see what to do after the water resides,” Sarma added.
On Thursday, Sarma had visited flooded areas in Guwahati and the Majuli island.
A total of 21,13,204 people across 29 districts have been affected as major rivers continued to surge above normal levels, according to an official bulletin, dated July 4, of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
Among the worst-hit districts were Dhubri, Darrang and Cachar, news agency PTI reported.
