The Indian Institute of Management Jammu (IIM) commemorated India’s Techade initiative titled “Chips for Viksit Bharat” at its Jagti Campus Mandapam auditorium. Aligned with the national agenda of technological advancement and self-reliance, the event witnessed the laying of the foundation stone for three semiconductor facilities, graced by the virtual presence of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Prof. B.S Sahay, Director of IIM Jammu, presided over the event.
The live telecast of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi’s address served as a beacon of inspiration, igniting fervor and enthusiasm among attendees. His articulation of the vision behind India’s Techade initiative emphasized the transformative potential of semiconductor technology, captivating the audience with his vision for a digitally empowered nation. The foundation stones were laid for three crucial semiconductor projects: the Semiconductor Fabrication Facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) in Gujarat, the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon, Assam, and another OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat.
Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, addressing the youth of the country through video conferencing on the laying of the foundation stone of semiconductor facilities in Dholera, Sanand in Gujarat, and Morigaon in Assam, said that in the technology-driven 21st century, designing and manufacturing semiconductor chips in India will create significant capability in leading India towards self-reliance and modernization. It will also lead the fourth industrial revolution.
Dr. Parveen K. Bangotra, Former Scientist “SG” with Semiconductor Laboratory (ISRO) addressed the students during the inauguration, emphasizing the vital role of semiconductors in modern life. He highlighted that the inauguration of three new semiconductor facilities in India will propel the nation towards global leadership in this essential technology.
Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu emphasized India’s transition from small-scale to mega-scale endeavors, aligning with the ethos of “Make in India, Made for the World.” Recognizing the pivotal role of semiconductors, he announced a significant shift towards self-reliance with the laying of the foundation stone for three semiconductor manufacturing plants. This initiative promises to benefit Indian industries and citizens, bolstering the economy and positioning India as a global hub for high-tech industries. He expressed confidence in India’s ability to become a developed nation by 2047, underlining the nation’s determination for significant socio-economic progress. By harnessing initiatives like semiconductor manufacturing, India is advancing towards self-reliance and long-term development objectives. He mentioned that IIM Jammu’s role as the nodal center for E-governance and the signing of an MoU with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir in the days to come.
Present on the occasion were Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, IIM Jammu, and Cmdr. Kesavan Baskkaran, CAO, IIM Jammu. Various presentations ranging from “Impact of Semiconductors in Health Care Industry”, “Semiconductors in the Indian economy”&”India: Rise of Semiconductor Giant” were delivered covering the impact of semiconductors in different sectors by students of IIM Jammu. The event witnessed the participation of over 500 students, faculty, officers, and staff, showcasing a convergence of ideas and visionary leadership.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sudip Das, Faculty, IIM Jammu and culminated with the national anthem.
More than 60,000 colleges, universities, and educational institutes, including IITs, IIMs, NITs, IISER, IISc, Central Universities, and other top institutes, were associated with today’s event. Additionally, leaders from Taiwan reportedly joined the program virtually, underscoring the significance of the semiconductor plant in India.
This event underscored IIM Jammu’s role as a catalyst for innovation and collaboration, laying the groundwork for leveraging semiconductor technology for the benefit of Viksit Bharat. Through such initiatives, IIM Jammu reaffirms its dedication to advancing the nation’s technological prowess and contributing to its journey towards self-reliance.
