The runway of the Jammu airport, which has been waiting for an extension for a long time, has become eight thousand feet. After completion of the runway expansion work, IndiGo’s flight took off from Jammu airport and this aircraft was saluted with water cannon on the newly built runway. Earlier, the runway of Jammu airport was 6700 feet long, which is the takeoff of incoming aircraft here. And it was too short for landing. Due to the short runway, the aircraft coming here used to carry less weight than their capacity, and they also had to apply emergency brakes to stop.

The expansion of the runway of the Jammu airport was completed by the Airport Authority in collaboration with the Air Force and MES, while Director Airport Jammu Sanjeev Kumar Garg, Air Commander GS Bullar and other officials were also present on the occasion of the inauguration of the new runway. Indigo aircraft 6E-137 took off from the new runway after duly worshipping. In addition to the new runway, a 2,800-metre-long boundary ball has also been constructed at the airport, and a turn pad is also being built to divert the Airbus 321 after landing.

On the other hand, Director Airport Jammu Sanjeev Kumar Garg thanked the construction agencies and related departments for completing the runway expansion work of the airport. He said that the new terminal at Belicharana would provide more facilities to the commuters coming here.

A decade ago, the length of the runway of the Jammu airport was 5879 feet, i.e. 1780 meters, whereas any national-level airport should have at least 7500 feet (about 2300 meters). The Airport Authority of India has also raised questions on the short runway of the Jammu airport several times and has sought help from the administration for its expansion. In the first phase, its length was increased to 6700 feet, while now it has been increased to eight thousand feet. The army land adjoining the airport became the first hurdle for the runway extension. But, later, the administration gave the army land in the Sujwan area instead, while later, the animal husbandry department’s land was also acquired in Belicharana, where the terminal was built.
