Amid a spate of civilian killings in Jammu and Kashmir, Army chief General MM Naravane on Monday left for a two-day trip to Jammu to take stock of the overall security situation in the region.

He is also scheduled to visit forward areas near the Line of Control and be briefed by top officials on the ground on the ongoing operations there, said Army officials.

The visit comes amid a series of attacks on civilians in the Valley. On Sunday, terrorists shot down two labourers and critically injured another one in Kulgam district in South Kashmir, taking the number of civilians killed in targeted attacks this month to 11.

On Sunday evening, the terrorists shot down two labourers and critically injured another one in the Kulgam district in South Kashmir, the latest in the series of attacks targeting civilians.

The Sunday incident came a day after a golgappa vendor from Bihar and a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur were shot dead by terrorists in the Valley.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had earlier said that he would avenge every drop of “innocent civilians’ blood” by hunting down terrorists and their sympathisers. He also said attempts are being made to disrupt the peace and socio-economic progress of Jammu and Kashmir and the individual growth of people.
