In what could land Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu in an embarrassing situation, social media users have been calling for his resignation after Congress chief Rahul Gandhi lost the family bastion Amethi to BJP candidate Smriti Irani. Last month, while campaigning in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress leader had announced that he would quit politics if Gandhi loses from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi seat in Lok Sabha elections 2019. The cricketer-turned-politician had also rejected the claim that Irani, who contested against Gandhi for the second time in 2019 elections, was a tough contender in Amethi, the Congress stronghold for years. Reminding him of his statement, some social media users on Twitter asked the Congress leader to keep his word and quit. The Congress president faced a humiliating defeat from the family bastion at the hands of Irani on Thursday. The BJP leader defeated Gandhi by a margin of 55120 votes. In the last general elections, Irani gave a tough fight to the Congress president, who represented the Amethi seat for consecutive three terms- 2004, 2009 and 2014. On Thursday, Gandhi congratulated his political rival, saying he “hopes Irani will take care of the people of Amethi.”
