Terming frequent closure of Jammu-Srinagar national highway as the reason for congestion of traffic on Mughal Road, District Development Commissioner, Poonch, Rahul Yadav, said that the authorities are trying their best to ease the congestion.
The DDC was interacting with media persons after chairing multiple meetings with officers of sub-divisional administration in Surankote, aimed to devise a proper plan for vehicular movement on Mughal Road. He said, “Frequent closure of Jammu-Srinagar national highway has resulted in three to four times increase in traffic on Mughal Road, which is the main cause of congestion.”
He further said, “Besides, Mughal Road is yet to be made two-way and it gets too congested at some places. Plus, if vehicular movement increases multiple times under such conditions, then it becomes difficult to run smooth traffic.”
Replying to a question regarding checkpoint at Poshana where people have to wait for hours for their turn, Yadav said that the problem is taking place due to heavy traffic and the administration is hopeful of ease in the days to come after Jammu-Srinagar national highway becomes normal. “We cannot change the location of the checkpoint at Poshana as it is a strategic location, which has been set up keeping in view all the link roads starting from Mughal Road,” Yadav said, adding that district administration is regularly in contact with army authorities.
“The problem is not due to checking, which has been going on since years, but it is due to high volume of traffic which has suddenly increased due to closure of Jammu-Srinagar highway,” he said.
