India’s teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered a sensational performance to guide the visitors to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening T20 International at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday. The 15-year-old rewrote the record books by smashing the fastest T20I half-century by an Indian while also becoming the youngest player ever to score an international fifty. The convincing win also marked Shreyas Iyer’s first victory as India’s T20I captain, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing a modest target of 126, India suffered an early setback when Abhishek Sharma departed for just one run. However, Sooryavanshi showed remarkable confidence and maturity beyond his years, launching an aggressive counterattack that completely shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
The young left-hander announced his arrival in style by taking on Zimbabwe’s pace attack from the very beginning. He hammered Richard Ngarava for two towering sixes and a boundary in the second over before continuing his fearless assault against Brad Evans and Blessing Muzarabani. Displaying exceptional timing and powerful strokeplay, Sooryavanshi found boundaries with ease and never allowed the bowlers to settle.
His breathtaking innings reached another milestone when he raced to his maiden international fifty in just 18 deliveries, setting a new record for the fastest T20I half-century by an Indian batter. The explosive knock included four boundaries and four massive sixes, leaving the Zimbabwe bowlers with little answer to his relentless attacking approach.
Soon after reaching the landmark, Sooryavanshi’s innings came to an end when he top-edged a delivery from Ngarava to deep third. By then, however, the contest had effectively been decided, with India well on course for victory thanks to the youngster’s extraordinary contribution.
Ishan Kishan ensured there were no further complications in the chase with a fluent innings of 35, rotating the strike effectively while punishing loose deliveries. Captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 27, calmly steering the innings to the finish, while Tilak Varma added the finishing touches with an unbeaten five.
India comfortably reached 126 for three in only 13.2 overs, completing the chase with 40 balls to spare and underlining their superiority in all departments.
Earlier in the evening, India’s bowlers laid the foundation for victory with a disciplined and controlled performance after Zimbabwe opted to bat. The hosts struggled to build meaningful partnerships against a well-organised Indian attack that maintained pressure throughout the innings.
Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav were the standout performers with the ball, claiming two wickets each while conceding only 18 and 19 runs respectively. Their accurate bowling restricted Zimbabwe’s scoring opportunities and prevented the home side from gaining momentum.
Wessly Madhevere top-scored for Zimbabwe with 39, while Tadiwanashe Marumani remained unbeaten on 27. Despite their efforts, Zimbabwe could only post 125 for seven, a total that proved well below par on a batting-friendly surface.
India’s dominant all-round display, highlighted by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s historic innings, has provided the visitors with a perfect start to the series.
