Amajor tragedy unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district after an under-construction bridge collapsed during an overnight storm, leaving at least six workers dead and several others feared trapped beneath the debris. The accident took place at the Kandaur-Morakandar bridge project in the Kurara area, where labourers were working through the night when portions of the structure suddenly gave way.
Officials said slabs, support piers, and shuttering structures crashed down around 2 am after strong winds and severe weather battered the region, triggering panic at the construction site. An urgent rescue operation was launched involving SDRF teams, police, and district authorities.
According to local officials, construction activity was underway at the bridge site when intense storm conditions struck the area shortly after midnight. The force of the weather reportedly weakened sections of the structure, leading to the collapse of major components of the under-construction bridge.
Workers and security personnel present at the site were caught beneath falling concrete slabs and twisted metal structures as parts of the bridge caved in.
Residents living nearby said the storm was unusually severe and was followed by loud crashing sounds from the construction zone. Several labourers are believed to have been trapped under heavy debris immediately after the collapse.
