Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment, and Tribal Affairs Javed Ahmad Rana on Thursday inaugurated the City Forest Park at Batote, marking a significant step towards strengthening green infrastructure and promoting eco-tourism in the region. The newly developed park is expected to serve as a key recreational and environmental asset for both residents and visitors.
The minister was accompanied by legislators Sajjad Shaheen and Arjun Singh Raju, along with senior officers of the forest department, including Dr. V. Senthil Kumar and Dr. A. D. Singh. Their presence underscored the importance of the initiative in advancing environmental sustainability and regional development. Developed by the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, the City Forest Park has been established over an area of 12 hectares at an estimated cost of Rs 62 lakh. The project has been conceptualized to create a vibrant green space that offers recreational opportunities while also promoting ecological conservation and environmental awareness among the public.
Addressing the gathering, the minister highlighted the growing importance of urban forest spaces in enhancing environmental quality and improving public well-being. He noted that such green initiatives play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of urbanization, including pollution and loss of biodiversity. By providing accessible natural spaces, these projects encourage healthier lifestyles and foster a deeper connection between people and the environment.
He further emphasized that the City Forest Park would serve as a catalyst for nature-based tourism in the region. According to him, the development of eco-friendly destinations not only attracts visitors but also generates economic opportunities for local communities. He stressed that community participation is vital for the success of conservation efforts and called upon residents to actively engage in preserving the park and its surroundings.
Highlighting the broader environmental impact, the minister stated that initiatives like the City Forest Park contribute significantly to climate resilience. By increasing green cover and promoting sustainable practices, such projects help in combating climate change while offering eco-friendly recreational options for the public. The park has been thoughtfully designed with a range of eco-friendly amenities aimed at enhancing visitor experience without compromising sustainability.
Key features include scenic viewpoints that provide panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, a 50-metre walking trail for nature enthusiasts, and a wooden bridge that adds both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Additionally, soil and moisture conservation measures such as Dry Rubble Stone Masonry have been incorporated to ensure environmental stability and long-term sustainability of the area.
Outlining future plans, the minister announced several proposed developments to further enrich the park’s infrastructure. These include the construction of an additional wooden bridge, development of a dedicated children’s park, and establishment of a thematic Nagar Van to promote urban forestry. Plans are also underway to create a selfie point aimed at attracting younger visitors and to add more viewpoints to enhance the overall experience.
The inauguration of the City Forest Park marks an important milestone in the government’s efforts to promote sustainable development and eco-tourism in the region. Officials expressed optimism that the park would not only serve as a hub for recreation but also as a model for future green initiatives across Jammu and Kashmir.
