District Legal Services Authority Budgam conducted an awareness programme at Al-Asama Educational Institute to educate students and staff about legal rights of persons with mental illness and intellectual disabilities as well as the growing risks of digital frauds and online scams.
The programme was organized under the aegis of the Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority and under the chairmanship of O. P. Bhagat, Chairman District Legal Services Authority and Principal District and Sessions Judge Budgam. The initiative aimed at spreading awareness regarding the provisions of the NALSA Legal Services to Persons with Mental Illness and Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Scheme 2024 and sensitizing participants about safe practices in the digital space.
During the session, Tajher Bashir, System Officer e Courts Budgam, delivered a detailed presentation on cybercrimes and digital threats. He explained various forms of online fraud such as phishing attacks, one time password frauds, identity theft, hacking and data breaches. He highlighted how these crimes are increasing rapidly with the growing use of digital platforms and stressed the importance of awareness in preventing such incidents.
He also shared practical safety measures, including avoiding suspicious links, safeguarding personal information, using secure passwords and being cautious while sharing one time passwords. He further informed the participants about the legal consequences associated with cybercrimes and explained the remedies available to victims. His interaction helped the audience understand both the technical and legal aspects of digital safety.
The programme also focused on the NALSA Scheme 2024, which aims to ensure access to free legal aid and protection of rights for persons suffering from mental illness and intellectual disabilities. The resource person elaborated on the key features of the scheme and emphasized the role of legal services institutions in supporting vulnerable sections of society. Participants were sensitized about the challenges faced by individuals with mental illness within the legal system. It was explained that such individuals often face difficulties in understanding legal proceedings, which makes it essential to provide them with specialized legal assistance and proper representation. The discussion highlighted the importance of ensuring dignity, fairness and equal access to justice for all.
The session also covered the objectives of the legal services scheme, including the availability of free legal aid, protection of rights and the responsibility of legal services authorities in ensuring equitable treatment. The speakers stressed that awareness among the public is crucial to ensure that such benefits reach those who need them the most.
The programme concluded with an interactive session, where students and staff actively participated and raised queries related to cyber safety and legal rights. The initiative was appreciated for its informative content and its role in empowering individuals with knowledge about legal protections and digital security.
