At a time when the administration is urging people to wash hands with clean water frequently, the residents of Shahgund, Bandipora have accused Public Health Engineering (PHE) of supplying contaminated water to them. According to locals, the entire village has been receiving muddy and contaminated water for last six months. “This water is not fit for even washing hands or bathing, which is necessary in current situation when cases of COVID-19 disease are increasing. We feel that use of this water makes us unclean and susceptible to new diseases,” the locals told Greater Kashmir. “Each passing day our children complain of different ailments. When we consult doctors they advise us to avoid using contaminated water but we no other alternative,” the villagers added. The villagers receive water from a nearby Gundboon water tank. Despite the tank having a good filtration plant and availability of bleaching powders, the locals accused the concerned employees of not performing their duties according to manuals. Executive Engineer PHE Sumbal Abdul Hameed said, “I will look into the matter and check why muddy water is being supplied to the people.”
