Cricket Canada has appointed Monty Desai as the head coach of its men’s national team, a move seen as an important step toward strengthening the side ahead of upcoming international competitions. The decision reflects the board’s intent to rebuild and enhance the team’s performance on the global stage.
Desai brings with him more than two decades of coaching experience across international cricket, having worked with several emerging and established teams including Nepal, Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, and the West Indies. Over the years, he has built a reputation for developing competitive squads and creating structured, disciplined team environments, particularly in associate cricket nations striving to establish themselves internationally.
One of Desai’s notable achievements includes guiding Nepal to regain its One Day International (ODI) status and helping the team qualify for major International Cricket Council tournaments. His contribution to Afghanistan’s growth during crucial qualification phases has also been widely acknowledged, as the team transitioned into a strong contender in global cricket. His coaching philosophy has consistently emphasized long-term development, tactical discipline, and nurturing young talent.
Speaking on his appointment, Desai expressed gratitude to Cricket Canada for placing their trust in him. He said he was honoured to take on the responsibility and highlighted his familiarity with the Canadian cricket system, having previously worked in the country. According to him, Canada possesses significant untapped potential along with a strong passion for the sport, which can be harnessed to achieve consistent success. Desai also stressed the importance of associate cricket in driving the global expansion of the game. He noted that countries like Canada have a valuable opportunity to grow within the international cricket framework, provided there is a focused effort to build a strong team culture and a clear pathway for player development. His immediate goal, he said, will be to instill a mindset that translates promise into tangible results on the field. Cricket Canada president Arvinder Khosa described the appointment as part of a broader long-term vision to restore the team’s competitiveness and standing in international cricket. Secretary Paramjit Saini also expressed confidence in Desai’s ability to elevate the standard of Canadian cricket and guide the team toward sustained progress in the coming years.
