ramban, April 26
A large public meeting was convened at Dak Bungalow in Ramban to deliberate on concerns surrounding the Sawalkakote Hydroelectric Project and to safeguard the rights and interests of the local population. The gathering was attended by residents, youth, and members of civil society, who voiced strong opposition to any move that could divert project-related benefits away from Ramban district.
Participants stressed that Ramban must remain the primary stakeholder in the project and that all-weather road connectivity should continue through the district. Strong objections were raised to proposals suggesting alternative access routes from Udhampur, with speakers asserting that any such change would undermine Ramban’s rightful role in the project. The meeting unanimously outlined key demands, including that the project remain centred in Ramban, compensation be provided strictly in accordance with the Fair Compensation Act, and that local residents be given first preference in employment and other opportunities arising from the project.
To take the movement forward in an organised manner, a Sawalkakote Joint Action Committee (JAC) was constituted. Fairoz Khan was elected President, while Muzaffar Lone was appointed Legal Advisor, along with several other members representing different sections of society.
The JAC announced that it will hold a press conference on May 1 to outline its future course of action. A public rally is also being planned. The meeting concluded with a united resolve to continue the struggle through lawful and democratic means until the rights of the people of Ramban are fully protected.
