JAMMU, June 6
To further strengthen the existing defense relations between India and Oman in the maritime domain, the 6th edition of Staff Talks between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) were conducted from June 4-5, 2024, in New Delhi. The delegation from the RNO was led by Commodore Jasim Mohammed Ali Al Balushi, Director General of Operations and Plans. Commodore Manmeet Singh Khurana, Commodore (Foreign Cooperation), led the delegation from the Indian Navy.
These Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks serve as a testament to the strong bilateral relations between India and Oman, two historical maritime neighbors. The discussions during the talks were comprehensive and focused on several key areas aimed at enhancing cooperation and interoperability between the two navies. Both sides deliberated on common maritime security challenges, emphasizing the necessity for enhanced interoperability at sea. The discussions also covered various aspects of operational collaboration, information sharing, maritime domain awareness, training, meteorology, hydrography, and technical assistance.
A significant part of the delegation’s visit was their tour of the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) in Gurugram. Here, they were briefed on the center’s role in enhancing maritime security and fostering cooperation among the Indian Ocean littoral states.
The delegation also called on Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy, where they discussed further avenues for strengthening naval cooperation.
Oman is one of India’s closest partners in the Gulf region, and the regular conduct of Staff Talks plays a crucial role in consolidating gains in naval cooperation and deepening the existing partnership between the two navies. The strategic location of Oman, overlooking critical maritime routes in the Gulf, makes it an indispensable partner for India in ensuring regional maritime security. The longstanding relationship between the two countries is rooted in shared historical, cultural, and economic ties, which have grown stronger with time.
The Staff Talks provided an opportunity for both navies to exchange insights on their operational experiences and best practices, further enhancing mutual understanding and coordination. These discussions are particularly pertinent given the dynamic maritime security environment in the region, characterized by piracy, smuggling, and other transnational threats. By working together, the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman aim to address these challenges more effectively, ensuring the safety and security of the maritime commons.
In conclusion, the 6th edition of the IN-RNO Staff Talks underscores the commitment of both India and Oman to deepening their defense ties and enhancing maritime cooperation. The fruitful discussions and exchanges during these talks are expected to pave the way for more robust and effective collaboration in the future, contributing to regional stability and security.
