The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday noted corruption in high offices has a serious impact on public confidence and prompt trial should be conducted in corruption cases. The Court made the observation while hearing a plea of the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in financial irregularities case.
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered, has approached the High Court against framing charges in the financial irregularities case. Ghosh sought postponement of framing charges against him in the financial irregularities case.
Hearing the plea, a bench comprising of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Gaurang Kanth noted, “Corruption in high places has serious impact on public confidence in the affairs of the state. A prompt trial of persons accused of corruption would reinforce the faith of the people in the justice delivery system,” PTI reported.
The bench added the accused have right to a fair trial and “requirement of a prompt trial is an unexceptionable necessity”.
The Central Bureau of Investigation investigating the case has arrested former principal Ghosh and four others over charges of alleged financial irregularities at the institution. The accused are currently remanded to judicial custody. The CBI submitted its probe report in Court on Tuesday and informed the bench that it would share a copy with the accused by Wednesday.
