At least five people were shot on Tuesday following an attack on a school in Orebro, Sweden. Reportedly, the attacker is believed to be among those injured.
Emergency services responded immediately after the alert. Reportedly, the shooting took place inside the school. “This is currently seen as attempted murder, arson and aggravated weapons offence,” police said in a statement. The police are searching the area to find more injured.
The four among those injured had to undergo surgeries, with one of them in a serious condition.
The shooting took place in Orebro, some 200 km west of Stockholm, at the Risbergska school for adults who did not complete their formal education or failed to get the grades to continue to higher education. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that it is “a very painful day for all of Sweden.” He also added that his thoughts are with all affected by the attack.
“My thoughts are also with all those whose normal school day was replaced with terror. Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience,” he said.
So far the police has confirmed that the attacker is a man. “We are investigating the incident,” said the police without divulging more information. “I took all my 15 students out into the hallway and we started running,” Maria Pegado told Reuters. “I heard two shots…We were close to the school entrance,” she added.
Police are yet to confirm if there are any casualties.
