Owners Of UP Cold Storage Which Collapsed, Killing 14, Arrested

Police have arrested the owners of a cold storage in UP’s Sambhal after the roof collapse of the building killed 14 people.

Police on Saturday arrested two owners of the Sambhal cold storage in UP from Uttarakhand after a roof collapse incident in the building claimed the lives of 14 people. The accused identified as Rohit Agarwal and Ankit Agarwal were arrested from Uttarakhand’s Haldwani under the charges of Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, reported news agency PTI. 

Sambhal District Magistrate Manish Bansal while talking to reporters said, “Cold storage owners Rohit Agarwal and Ankit Agarwal have been arrested from Haldwani in Uttarakhand in connection with the case of roof collapse of cold storage in Sambhal.”

A police official while talking to reporters said that the roof was built just three months back without the necessary permission from the administration and the quantity of potatoes that were stored there was much more than its capacity as well.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday visited the injured and sent orders to create a commission to investigate the cause of roof collapse.

UP CM also declared an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for those gravely injured, and free care for all those seriously injured in the tragedy, PTI reported citing a government official in Lucknow. 

Survivors From The Incident

Deputy Inspector General of Police Shalabh Mathur said that twenty-four people were recovered from the wreckage of the collapsed structure on Indira Road within the jurisdiction of the Chandausi police station, 14 of them died, as per the report.

According to District Magistrate Bansal, four people are being treated at a hospital in Moradabad, while six have been discharged.

According to Tarannum Raza, chief medical officer, about 25 physicians and 21 ambulances were pressed into service in the rescue mission. Ambulances from Moradabad, Budaun, and Rampur were also dispatched. To aid the rescue operation, searchlights were erected in the region. Earthmovers were also called in to help clear the rubble.
