LEH: Maintaining that Ladakh has realized its Union Territory dream after 70 years, Lt Governor R K Mathur has called for collective efforts to make the UT move forward on its golden journey. “In every experiment, there are some positive developments and challenges too in initial stages.
But if we work together, we can make Ladakh’s future. A Ladakh of its own dreams,” he said, while addressing a gathering after flagging off a cycle rally at Leh on second anniversary of Ladakh Union Territory, here. Lt Governor Mathur stressed that each Ladakhi is a partner in development and there are than 1700 elected representatives who have volunteered for development and strengthening democracy at grass root level in the Union Territory. “Other than the UT administration, we have more than 1700 elected representatives whether in Parliament, Council, Municipal bodies, Gram Panchayat etc, who have volunteered to help Ladakh in development,” he said.
Describing Ladakhi youth as most knowledgeable and alert, the Lt Governor said that the Union Territory was fortunate to have such a great asset besides its natural resources. “We have great natural resources and great human resources. Together they can do wonder and take Ladakh to a golden journey. A Ladakh of its own dream and this is my wish for the Union Territory,” he said, adding that the challenging before the new UT, will also have to be addressed through collective efforts. The Lt Governor launched several initiatives on 2nd anniversary of creation of UT Ladakh. Cleanliness drive, e-buses, cycle rally and Leh Phonya magazine were launched on the occasion LG Mathur handed over the keys of the Refuge Compactor and Grabbing Machine to the Municipal Committee Leh and launched the bilingual magazine published by the Department of Information and Public Relations called Leh Phonya.
This century-old publication started by the Moravian Missionaries in the first decade of the 20th century under the name Ladakh Phonya is aimed at disseminating information on important policies and schemes implemented by the Administration and LAHDC Leh in Leh district and highlighting notable stories and achievements. Citing various initiatives taken by the villagers and residents in cleaning and conserving the ecosystem, LG Mathur termed Ladakhi society as culturally conscious of cleanliness and sanitation habits. He also stressed the need for inculcating the habit of generating minimal garbage and removing single-use plastic from the lives of the people. He also stressed the need for strictly following the practice of waste segregation and recycling for a successful waste management system. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Leh, Adv Tashi Gyalson, appreciated the steps taken by the UT Administration in starting several initiatives. He emphasised the need for mass participation in making such initiatives successful in protecting the natural resources and the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh.
He urged the people of Ladakh to contribute to building a strong foundation for the newly formed Union Territory of Ladakh.
