19 May, 2021 Jammu:  Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital gave a new lease of life to an 83-year old gentleman suffering from perforation of Gall bladder,  arare and life threatening complication related to gallstones with high morbidity and mortality due to delayed diagnosis. The patient was saved using minimally invasive procedurescomprising of Image guided drainage followed by Laparoscopic adhesiolysis and cholecystectomy.

Hailing from Srinagar,83 year old Mr. Abdul Rashid Khan, was admitted at a hospital in Jammu as he was complaining of pain abdomen and vomitings, where he was diagnosed with a perforation of gall Bladder and was advised Exploratory laparotomy, a major abdominal surgery requiring opening of abdomen. As the family wanted to have a second opinion they shifted him to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital for further management. On admission the patient was evaluated by Dr.SuhailKhuroo, Senior Consultant Surgical Gastroenterology and Minimal Access Surgery and team. The conventional treatment modality for the condition is Laparotomy, a surgery that involves opening of abdomen through a big incision with excessive postoperative pain, wound infections, prolonged bed rest, incisional hernias and adhesion formation. But owing to Abdul Rashid’s age the team of doctors felt performing a major surgery can be a high risk one so they planned for minimally invasive treatment. In this treatment, first the patient was subjected to CT guided percutaneous drainage of bilious fluid under the aegis of radiology team comprising of Dr Geetanjali Gupta, Dr AvinashRazdan and Dr Ishmeet Kaur and the once the patient recovered, Dr Khuroo performed Laparoscopic Adhesiolysis with Cholecystectomy. The surgery was successful and patient was discharged in stable condition thus avoiding a big scar and prolonged hospital stay. Today the patient is leading a  normal life.

Referring to the case Dr.Khuroo, Senior Consultant (GI and Minimal Access Surgery) at  Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, said, “CT or USG guided drainage avoids the need for laparotomies (Opening up abdomen surgically) thereby leads to lesser morbidity and faster recoveries. In fact, this treatment modality is best suited for high risk patients like Abdul Rashid.”

Adding to the present case scenario, Dr Suhail said that the two departments have come forward collaboratively as a team to manage conditions likegall bladder perforations, post operativebiliomas, liver abscess, intra-abdominal collections with good and promising results. Operating on high risk cases with advanced age, multiple comorbidities is all possible only because of the collaboration and cooperation of different departments right from dedicated Anesthesia and ICU teams, to cardiology, nephrology, neurology, gastroenterology, internal medicine and pulmonology, added Dr.Khuroo.

In fact, what sets the team at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super Speciality Hospital apart is the patient centric approach. They were very patient and addressed all my worries as well as queries and stood by me throughout the treatment duration.”
