Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh R K Mathur Monday laid stress on judicious use of water in Ladakh so as to overcome the prevailing crisis. Speaking at a plantation drive at Ganglais, the Lieutenant Governor appreciated the people for making collective and conscious efforts towards resolving issues concerning the land. “Need is to understand, manage and address issues in connection with nature. There are both traditional and non-traditional ways to find solutions keeping close proximity with traditional ways and mother nature”, he said and advised the people to ensure judicious use of water. The function was organised by Himalayan Institute of Alternative Learning (HIAL) in collaboration with Municipal Committee Leh, Phudo Society, Save the Himalayas Foundation, with special assistance from ITBP. The theme of the drive was ‘children as change-makers for climate’. Skyabje Drukpa Palga Rinpoche, Chairman/CEC LAHDC Leh Gyal P Wangyal, Director-Founder MIMC Ven Sanghasena, Rector Leh Campus KU Prof Farooq Khan, Founder-Director HIAL Sonam Wangchuk, President MC Leh Dr Namgyal, villagers of Leh Phudo, and students from different schools of Leh district participated in the function. Skyabje Drukpa Palga Rinpoche advised the citizens and students to seriously ponder over environmental issues and act very cautiously. Chairman/CEC LAHDC talked about the shortage of water and possible solutions by intelligent ways of artificial glaciers and ice-stupas. Founder-Director HIAL Sonam Wangchuk talked about challenges of receding glaciers at alarming rate and briefed LG about short-medium and long term possible water solutions. He informed about various indigenous herbs and grass to be planted in 5000 dug holes.
