Highlighting the importance of the holy relics, ‘Jore Sahib’, of Guru Gobind Singh and Mata Sahib Kaur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stated that they are a significant part of glorious Sikh history and also the nation’s cultural ethos.
Taking to social media platform X, the prime minister said, “The holy relics will inspire the future generations to follow the path of courage, righteousness, justice and social harmony shown by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.”
He expressed happiness over receiving the distinguished members of a Sikh delegation who handed over their recommendations with regard to the safekeeping and befitting display of the sacred and invaluable ‘Jore Sahib’. He also mentioned that during the meeting with Sikh delegation, noted singer Harshdeep Kaur sang a beautiful rendition of the Mool Mantra.
Union Minister Hardeep SIngh Puri, along with a committee of several eminent and well-known members of the Sikh community called on PM Modi to submit the recommendations for the safekeeping and befitting display of ‘Jore Sahib’ relics, a footwear each of Guru Gobind SIngh (right foot 11” by 3½”) and his revered wife Mata Sahib Kaur (left foot 9” by 3”).
The minister said his family has been fortunate enough to perform ‘seva’ of these relics from the time these were bestowed upon their ancestors by the Sikh Guru and Mata themselves, which was more than 300 years ago. “Our ancestor had the great divine blessing to be in the direct service of Dasam Pita. Legend has it that pleased with his seva, Guru Maharaj commanded him to ask for any reward in return,” he wrote in a post on the social media platform X.
He further said, “Our ancestor requested Guru Sahib to kindly grant him his divine permission to keep the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’ so that the direct blessings of Guru Sahib and Mata Ji continue in his family and their generations to follow.”
He informed that the last custodian of the ‘Jore Sahib’ was his late cousin Sardar Jasmeet Singh Puri, who lived in Delhi’s Karol Bagh on a street which was subsequently named ‘Guru Gobind Singh Marg’ to honour the sanctity of the precious relics.
Minister Puri further mentioned that since he is one of the eldest members of the family now, his cousin’s wife asked him to find an appropriate home for these relics, so that the faithful could pay their obeisance to the revered ‘Jore Sahib.’ Subsequently, he got the relics examined by the Ministry of Culture and carbon testing was also done to establish their authenticity and religious importance.
Members of the committee have made their recommendations and have presented a report for a decision befitting the relics to PM Modi.
