Dr. Pardeep Mahotra, Media Incharge, Jammu & Kashmir BJP, has expressed grave concern over the alarming reports of adulteration in food items, particularly sweets, in view of festive season. He said that such unscrupulous practices pose a serious threat to the health and lives of innocent people and cannot be tolerated at any cost.
Referring to the recent seizure of 2.6 quintals of adulterated sweets and 88 kilograms of spurious cheese by the Police in the Jammu Bus Stand area, Dr. Pardeep said this may only be the tip of the iceberg. He cautioned that such incidents point to a deeper malaise that must be dealt with firmly before it results in a health disaster.
“At a time when the people of Jammu and Kashmir are already reeling under the impact of incessant rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods, it is unfortunate that some vested interests are attempting to exploit the situation for profiteering by playing with the lives of citizens,” he remarked.
He added that while natural calamities are beyond human control, such man-made calamities caused by greed and criminal intent are highly condemnable and must be crushed with an iron hand.
Dr. Pardeep strongly emphasized that adulteration of food is not merely an economic offence but a direct assault on the fundamental right to life.
“Those who indulge in such heinous acts are enemies of society and deserve no leniency. The J&K government led by CM Omar Abdullah, and all concerned departments must take immediate and strict action to ensure that the sanctity of the festive season is not marred by such criminal practices,” he said.
Calling for a multi-pronged strategy, Dr. Pardeep urged authorities to intensify inspections of sweet shops, dairies, and food processing units across the Union Territory and check the movement of such adulterated items or ingredients from outside the UT as well. He appealed to the civil society and consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Dr. Pardeep Mahotra further asserted that the BJP stands firmly with the people and will continue to pressurize the administration to bring the culprits to justice. “The festive season should be a time of joy and celebration, not of fear and tragedy. Those indulging in adulteration must be identified, punished, and made an example so that no one dares to repeat such acts in the future,” Dr. Pardeep said.
