In an unprecedented move, US President Donald Trump on Monday placed the police in Washington DC under federal control and announced deployment of National Guard to the city in what he called was a crackdown on crime and homelessness.
Trump signed an executive order declaring a crime emergency in the District of Columbia (DC), invoking section 740 of the Home Rule Act), and section 301 of title 3, United States Code to place the Washington DC police under federal purpose.
“Effective immediately, the Mayor of the District of Columbia (Mayor) shall provide the services of the Metropolitan Police force for Federal purposes for the maximum period permitted under section 740 of the Home Rule Act,” the order stated.
The US president directed the Mayor of the District of Columbia to provide “the services of the Metropolitan Police force for Federal purposes for the maximum period permitted under section 740 of the Home Rule Act.”
Speaking to reporters in White House, Trump also announced, “I’m deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, D.C.”
The president said that the capital city of the US has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals.
“This is Liberation Day in D.C. — and we’re going to take our capital BACK,” he declared.
