Poonch, Apr 28
In a thoughtful and impactful initiative aimed at improving the living conditions of the Bakkarwal community, the Indian Army has distributed essential winter and health protection supplies in the remote areas of Sindrah and Haribudha in Poonch district. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by this nomadic community – particularly during the harsh winters and in difficult mountainous terrain – the Indian Army has stepped forward to offer timely support and assistance.
As part of this humanitarian effort, the Army provided high-quality sleeping bags designed to offer warmth and comfort in cold weather conditions, along with mosquito nets to protect against the spread of vector-borne diseases, which are a common threat in these regions. Given the Bakkarwals’ seasonal migration patterns and their prolonged stays in elevated, forested areas, these supplies will significantly enhance their safety, health, and overall quality of life.
This initiative reflects the Indian Army’s deep understanding of the needs of the local communities they serve. By addressing the basic requirements for warmth and disease prevention, the Army not only helps mitigate daily hardships but also builds resilience among vulnerable populations. These efforts are particularly significant in areas that are often neglected due to difficult access and geographical isolation.
Importantly, this outreach is part of a broader strategy by the Indian Army aimed at holistic engagement and nation-building. By offering tangible support, the Army also helps counter the risks of alienation and radicalization among marginalized groups, strengthening bonds of trust and cooperation between the Armed Forces and the local populace.
The distribution event was warmly received by the local communities, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the Indian Army’s consistent and compassionate support. Community leaders and youth representatives praised the Army’s commitment to their welfare, noting that such initiatives create a strong sense of inclusion and mutual respect. Beyond material aid, this initiative serves as a symbol of the Army’s enduring presence as a pillar of support in remote and vulnerable regions of Jammu and Kashmir. It reinforces the message that the Armed Forces are not just defenders of borders but also active partners in the socio-economic upliftment of citizens.
The Indian Army remains committed to continuing such programs in the future, aiming to foster peace, goodwill, and development across all regions of the Union Territory.
