The Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) Baramulla on Monday inaugurated the Inter-Zonal District Level Under-14 Girls Kho-Kho Championship at the Higher Secondary School Ground, Khawaja Bagh, bringing together young athletes from across the district in a celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and competitive spirit.
The two-day championship was formally inaugurated by District Youth Services and Sports Officer (DYSSO) Baramulla, Mushtaq Ahmad Pampori, in the presence of departmental officials, technical staff, coaches, and participating teams. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from young girls representing different zones of the district, reflecting the growing interest in sports among female students.
Addressing the gathering during the inaugural ceremony, Pampori highlighted the importance of sports in the overall development of children, particularly young girls. He stated that participation in sports not only enhances physical fitness but also helps develop confidence, discipline, leadership qualities, and decision-making skills. He emphasized that sporting activities play a crucial role in shaping responsible and confident individuals capable of meeting future challenges.
The DYSSO appreciated the increasing involvement of girls in various sporting disciplines and said that the department remains committed to creating opportunities for young athletes to showcase their talent. He noted that such tournaments provide a valuable platform for participants to gain competitive exposure and improve their skills through healthy competition.
A total of 216 athletes representing 18 different zones of Baramulla district are participating in the championship.
The tournament has been designed in a league-cum-knockout format, ensuring that all participating teams receive adequate opportunities to compete and demonstrate their abilities before progressing to the elimination stages.
The opening day of the championship witnessed several exciting matches played across two courts. Young players displayed remarkable agility, coordination, and determination throughout the contests, drawing appreciation from spectators and officials alike.
The matches reflected the growing standards of the sport at the grassroots level and highlighted the efforts being made to encourage sports participation among school-going girls.
On Court No. 1, teams representing Rohama, Nehalpora, Kunzer, and Sopore secured impressive victories in their respective matches. The players demonstrated strong teamwork and tactical awareness while competing against their opponents. Their performances earned praise from coaches and officials who observed the matches.
Meanwhile, on Court No. 2, the teams from Dangiwacha, Dangerpora, Pattan, and Wagoora emerged victorious after delivering commendable performances. The matches remained competitive and showcased the enthusiasm and dedication of the participants, many of whom are aspiring to represent the district and higher-level teams in the future.
The championship has generated considerable excitement among students, teachers, and sports enthusiasts. Officials observed that the event reflects the positive impact of continued efforts by the Department of Youth Services and Sports to strengthen sports infrastructure and encourage greater participation among young athletes, particularly girls.
The tournament is being conducted under the close supervision of DYSS Baramulla officials and technical staff to ensure smooth and fair competition. Necessary arrangements have been put in place for the comfort and safety of the participants throughout the event.
The championship will conclude tomorrow with the final matches, followed by a prize distribution and felicitation ceremony for the winning teams and outstanding performers. The event is expected to further boost interest in Kho-Kho and inspire more young girls across the district to actively participate in sports and physical activities.
