The historic border town of Ferozepur, often celebrated as the “Land of Bravehearts,” came alive with patriotic fervour and a spirit of unity as the Indian Army’s Golden Arrow Division organized the “Ferozepur Border Marathon – 2025” on November 9, 2025. The event served as a powerful symbol of national pride, honouring India’s fallen heroes while spreading awareness about the urgent need to combat the menace of drug abuse. With participation from thousands of people across the country, the marathon became a remarkable celebration of endurance, courage and collective resolve for a healthier, stronger India.
The event was flagged off by Major General R. S. Manral, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding of the Golden Arrow Division, in the presence of several eminent personalities who lent their support to the cause. Among the distinguished guests were Olympian Pargat Singh, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee; Shri Ranvir Singh Awla; Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi; Shri Virender Mohan Singhal; Shri Sameer Mittal; Shri Anirudh Gupta; Professor Jagmohan Singh; Colonel Krishan Badhwar (Retd), an acclaimed ultra-marathon runner; and Major D. P. Singh (Retd), popularly known as India’s Blade Runner. Senior officials from the civil administration and Punjab Police also attended the event, reinforcing the collaborative spirit between the armed forces, government institutions and civilians in addressing social challenges.
The marathon attracted participants from all walks of life-professional athletes, serving soldiers, students, influencers, and local residents-united by a shared vision of a drug-free India and a deep respect for the sacrifices of the nation’s martyrs. The event was not just a sports competition but a heartfelt tribute to India’s Bravehearts and a clarion call for social transformation. The marathon route was meticulously chosen to reflect Ferozepur’s historic and patriotic significance. Runners began their journey near the legendary Ferozepur Fort, a symbol of the town’s valour, and proceeded through scenic and heritage-rich locations before concluding at the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala.
As participants reached the finish line, they were greeted by a deeply emotional atmosphere at the memorial, which houses the samadhis of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Sukhdev and Shaheed Rajguru-icons of India’s freedom struggle. Many runners paused to offer floral tributes and observe a moment of silence in honour of these immortal heroes. The convergence of fitness, patriotism and social awareness created a profound sense of purpose that resonated across the gathering.
The Ferozepur Border Marathon was conceived not only to inspire physical fitness and community participation but also to spread awareness about the growing threat of drug addiction in Punjab and neighbouring regions. By engaging youth through a positive and constructive platform, the Indian Army sought to steer their energy toward nation-building and self-discipline. Through its message of unity and resilience, the event reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to promoting both national security and social responsibility.
The marathon’s success was reflected in the enthusiastic participation of citizens and the overwhelming public response it generated. Runners and spectators alike were moved by the event’s symbolism-combining tribute, fitness and awareness into one unified mission. The presence of decorated soldiers and inspirational personalities further elevated the morale of participants, reminding everyone that the fight against drugs and social decay is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort. By organizing the Ferozepur Border Marathon, the Golden Arrow Division once again demonstrated the Indian Army’s commitment to serving the nation beyond its military duties. The event highlighted how the armed forces continue to act as a catalyst for social change, unity and national pride.
As the sun set over Hussainiwala, the sight of thousands of runners carrying the message of hope and resilience embodied the spirit of India-strong, united and ever grateful to its heroes who sacrificed everything for the motherland.
