Police in Durgapur, West Bengal, on Tuesday said, as initially reported, the 23-year-old MBBS student from Jaleswar in Odisha was not gang-raped. They confirmed that only one person was involved in the sexual assault.
The second-year student was allegedly attacked on October 10 near her private medical college. The incident sparked political controversy in the state.
Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Chowdhury of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate said the conclusion is based on the survivor’s statement and physical evidence.
“According to the woman’s statement and the evidence, it has been established so far that only one person was involved. The investigation is ongoing. Clothes of the accused have been collected and sent for forensic testing,” Chowdhury said.
Chowdhury added that the police visited the crime scene to reconstruct the incident and are also investigating the role of the woman’s friend.
“The five previously arrested individuals were linked to our investigation.
The survivor’s mobile phone has been recovered. We visited the spot with the woman’s friend and conducted a reconstruction of the crime. Everything is being examined, and we are waiting for forensic and medical reports,” he said.
He further said, “The role of the woman’s friend is also being questioned. We are investigating his activities and questioning him as well.”
