MUMBAI, Sept 23
The stock market on Tuesday ended lower with the Sensex and Nifty 50 extending losses to their third consecutive session. The development comes amid concerns over an H-1B visa fee hike and uncertainty over whether India-US trade talks continue to weigh on sentiment.
At close, Sensex was at 82,102.10, down 58 points, or 0.07%, while the Nifty 50 settled at 25,169.50, down 33 points, or 0.13%.
BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices fell 0.29% and 0.35%, respectively. The overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms stood at below Rs 464 lakh crore from slightly over Rs 465 lakh crore in the previous session.
Among the sectors, FMCG, Realty, and IT indices ended as the top losers, falling by up to a percent. Nifty PSU Bank and Metal indices rose by a per cent each.
The Nifty Bank index rose by 0.41%, while the Financial Services index ended 0.12% higher. AU Small Finance Bank was the top gainer in the Nifty Bank index, rising nearly 4% to Rs 731.65 on the NSE. IndusInd Bank was up 2.82%, Axis Bank was up by 2.24%, and Bajaj Finance was up 1.93% ending as the top gainers in the Nifty index.
Further, as many as 31 stocks ended in the red with Tech Mahindra down by 2.16%, Trent down by 2.11%, and SBI Life Insurance Company was down by 2%.
Around 173 stocks hit their 52-week highs while 66 stocks touched 52-week lows.
Those on the highs included Adani Power Ltd, Ashok Leyland Ltd, Bajaj Finance Ltd, Canara Bank, Eicher Motors Ltd, Siemens Energy India Ltd, Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd, Jindal Steel Ltd, JSW Steel Ltd, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, MRF Ltd, Muthoot Finance Ltd, Radico Khaitan Ltd, Tata Investment Corporation Ltd, Tata Steel Ltd, Usha Martin Ltd, and Varroc Engineering Ltd.
In contrast, on lows were Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Ltd, Five-Star Business Finance Ltd, Pidilite Industries Ltd, Praj Industries Ltd, and Ramkrishna Forgings Ltd. Out of 4,311 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,797 advanced, while 2,354 declined. Some 160 stocks remained unchanged.
