new delhi, Sept 18
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed India’s strong support for Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, as she works to restore peace and stability in the country following violent protests earlier this month.
In his first conversation with Karki after the unrest, Modi also offered condolences for the lives lost during clashes between police and protesters.
The demonstrations, led mainly by Gen Z activists, erupted in response to alleged corruption and the social media restrictions imposed by the previous KP Sharma Oli government. “Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability,” Modi wrote on X.
The call, initially planned for Tuesday, was postponed to Thursday. Karki, 73, assumed office last Sunday, taking charge of the caretaker government after KP Sharma Oli resigned amid the unrest.

Her immediate priority includes organizing national elections. The polls will take place on March 5. In addition, she is overseeing the rebuilding of public infrastructure damaged during the protests.
Observers say Karki faces a challenging task in uniting a country shaken by recent political unrest. India’s support, Modi emphasized, will be consistent and focused on promoting peace, progress, and prosperity for Nepal.
Karki’s appointment comes at a critical time. The interim government aims to stabilize the nation and prepare for a smooth transition ahead of elections.
