The Sozni artisans of Sonapah, under the banner of the Sozin Artisan Foundation (SONPHA), have voiced serious concerns over the prolonged delay in the announcement of handicraft awards, stating that the more-than-year-long wait is not only disheartening but also harmful to the preservation of Kashmir’s traditional arts.
These awards, meant to recognize excellence in the age-old craft of Sozni embroidery, have yet to be announced, leaving skilled artisans in a state of uncertainty. According to artisans, the lack of communication from the Department of Handicrafts, Kashmir, has further exacerbated the situation. “We have waited patiently for over a year, but the absence of a proper system has left us in uncertainty,” said one artisan. “Awards and recognitions are not just honors – they are motivation for us to continue preserving our cultural heritage.”
The artisans stressed that timely recognition is essential not just for morale, but also for the very survival of traditional crafts that support thousands of livelihoods and form a vital part of Kashmir’s cultural identity.
Speaking on behalf of SONPHA, Nazir Ahmad Shara made a heartfelt appeal to the Honourable Director of Handicrafts, Kashmir, urging immediate intervention. “The delay in the Sozni Awards has deeply disheartened the artisan community. While official timelines may exist, for artisans, the time is always now. Their dedication, skill, and artistry deserve timely recognition,” he said.
SONPHA has called upon the Department to streamline the award process and ensure that such delays do not recur in the future. The Foundation warned that without prompt recognition and institutional support, the future of Kashmir’s rich artisanal legacy hangs in the balance. “Artisans are the soul of the Valley’s heritage. To respect our art is to respect our people,” SONPHA concluded. “We urge those in authority to stand with local artisans and act without delay.”
