In a bid to safeguard public health, the Odisha Government has decided to strengthen food safety measures in various urban areas by sanctioning 74 new posts for Food Safety Officers, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling said on Tuesday.
The officers will be recruited through open advertisement and a rigorous selection process conducted by the Staff Selection Commission. At present, Food Safety Officers are mostly posted in districts, but they also operate in major city areas.
Their responsibilities include monitoring food safety in Ashram schools, hostels, and other institutions, imparting hygiene training to food business operators (FBOs), and checking food safety parameters in hotels, street food vending stalls, and other outlets.
Health and Family Welfare Secretary Aswathy S. has directed the Commissioner of Food Safety to expedite the recruitment, training, and deployment of these officers to bring all urban local bodies under the ambit of comprehensive food safety activities.
