The Indian Army recently organized an interaction with the Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities at Mathiyanigala in Poonch on 10 August 2025, bringing together members of both communities, including elders and youth, in a warm and cordial atmosphere. The initiative was part of the Army’s ongoing outreach efforts aimed at strengthening bonds with the local population, understanding their aspirations, and addressing their concerns.
These regular engagements have been a key part of the Army’s civil-military cooperation strategy in the border region, where mutual trust and cooperation play a vital role in maintaining peace, harmony, and development.
The gathering saw participation from 14 members of the Gujjar community and three members of the Bakkarwal community. The presence of elders provided the event with the depth of traditional wisdom and experience, while the involvement of youth brought energy and forward-looking ideas to the discussion. The Indian Army created an open and inclusive environment for conversation, allowing participants to speak freely about matters of significance to their communities.
During the interaction, discussions centered around key issues affecting the daily lives of the Gujjar and Bakkarwal people. Another important topic was youth engagement. Participants emphasized the necessity of involving young members of the communities in constructive activities such as skill development programs, vocational training, and sports. The Army representatives listened attentively, noting the aspirations of the youth for better employment prospects and integration into mainstream opportunities while preserving their cultural heritage. Such initiatives are seen as a way to prevent alienation, encourage community participation in development, and strengthen the sense of belonging among younger generations. The interaction also played a vital role in promoting cultural understanding and integration between the Army and the local population.
Both the Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities possess rich traditions, folklore, and lifestyles that are an integral part of the region’s identity.
