The Uttar Pradesh government has approved two major tourism infrastructure projects worth ?16 crore, aimed at transforming the historic Kalinjar Fort in Banda district into a premier heritage tourism destination.
The plan includes ?12 crore for on-site development within the fort complex and ?4 crore for decorative pathway lighting on the Kalinjar–Panna and Kalinjar–Banda roads.
UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said on Tuesday that this strategic initiative is designed to position Bundelkhand as a key player in India’s heritage tourism circuit.
He noted that the state government is committed to tourism-led economic development and that Kalinjar’s historical and architectural value offers tremendous potential.
Located atop the Vindhya range at an elevation of 800 feet, Kalinjar Fort has witnessed a surge in tourist footfall over the past three years.
Tourist numbers rose from 1.35 lakh in 2022 to 4.54 lakh in 2023, and further to approximately 6.25 lakh in 2024. Between January and July this year alone, about 4.03 lakh tourists visited the site — marking a nearly fourfold increase in three years.
Officials attribute this growth to improved connectivity, targeted digital promotion, and the government’s renewed focus on heritage tourism. The fort’s striking architecture and lush monsoon landscape have made it especially popular during the rainy season.
The ?4 crore decorative lighting project will enhance nighttime visibility along the two approach roads, improve road safety, and create a more immersive and welcoming arrival experience for visitors. The installation will feature heritage-style fixtures designed to complement the historic surroundings.
The ?12 crore sanctioned for the fort itself will be used to upgrade visitor amenities, including paved walkways, signage, rest zones, and information centers. The goal is to accommodate increasing footfall while preserving the site’s historical integrity.
Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “Kalinjar will anchor India’s heritage tourism circuit. This is not just about restoration — it’s about unlocking the economic value of our culture. We are investing in a legacy that creates livelihoods, preserves identity, and attracts global attention. Bundelkhand has waited long enough — now is the time to give it its rightful place on the tourism map.”
He also emphasized that the state’s tourism policy is rooted in sustainable development and inclusive growth. With tourist interest steadily increasing, Kalinjar is on track to become one of Uttar Pradesh’s flagship destinations for heritage and experiential travel.
