Poonch, july 18
Continuing its noble efforts under Operation SADBHAVANA, the Indian Army organized a humanitarian assistance and medical outreach program for the Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities residing in the remote high-altitude regions of Marhot and Surankote in Poonch district. These nomadic communities, known for their traditional migratory lifestyle and dependence on livestock grazing in mountainous terrain, often remain beyond the reach of conventional welfare schemes and public healthcare systems. Recognizing their unique challenges, the Indian Army once again stepped in to provide critical aid and build stronger community bonds. In recent weeks, Army units deployed in forward and high-altitude posts have proactively distributed all-weather sleeping bags, mosquito nets treated with insecticides, and other basic survival materials to Bakkarwal families traversing summer grazing routes. These essential items are aimed at ensuring protection from unpredictable mountain weather and reducing the risk of vector-borne diseases during the ongoing monsoon season. In addition to material aid, the Army also organized mobile medical patrols in inaccessible and underserved areas. These patrols provided basic healthcare services, medical advice, and essential medicines to those in need. Over 20 individuals from the Bakkarwal community, including elders, women, and children, benefitted from this timely outreach. The presence of Army medical staff in these remote hamlets helped bridge the critical gap in healthcare access and brought much-needed relief to the nomadic population.
The initiative was warmly received by the local communities. Many community elders expressed their deep appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for the Army’s compassionate and continuous efforts to support them. Their words reflected the growing bond of trust and mutual respect between the armed forces and the people of this border region.
Such outreach efforts are not new to the Indian Army, which has long played a pivotal role in promoting peace, development, and social welfare in remote areas through Operation SADBHAVANA. These engagements not only address the immediate needs of vulnerable populations but also serve to enhance cooperation and goodwill between the Army and the civilian populace.
The Indian Army’s commitment to nation-building and people-centric operations was once again reflected in this humanitarian gesture. In every such effort, the Army reaffirms its enduring motto: “Indian Army – Always with the Awaam.”
