Continuing its commitment to fostering strong civil-military relations and promoting the welfare of the remote and marginalized communities, the Indian Army organized a successful Medical and Veterinary Camp on 09 July 2025 at Padri Sarekhi in Bhaderwah, Doda district. The event was part of the Indian Army’s larger humanitarian outreach under Project Sadbhavana, aimed at uplifting the health standards of the underserved Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities and strengthening the bond between the Army and the local population.
Inaugurated by the Company Commander, the camp was held with the objective of addressing the healthcare and veterinary needs of people residing in this far-flung mountainous region. Speaking at the inauguration, the Company Commander reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people and pledged continued support to the local communities. The initiative was met with overwhelming appreciation, as it provided much-needed access to health services in a region where healthcare infrastructure is sparse and distances to the nearest medical facilities are long.
A highly dedicated medical team was deployed for the smooth conduct of the camp. The team included one Medical Officer, two Nursing Assistants, and two Battlefield Nursing Assistants from the Indian Army. To further augment the services, one Lady Medical Officer and one Pharmacist from Sub-District Hospital, Dandi, were present along with one Veterinary Doctor from the Government Hospital. Their combined efforts ensured holistic care for both people and livestock.
The camp saw an impressive turnout from nearby villages, particularly from Gujjar and Bakkarwal families who had come down from the higher pastures. In total, 267 human patients were provided medical check-ups and treatment, including 133 women, 78 men, and 56 children. Additionally, 136 livestock were also treated, acknowledging the vital role animals play in the pastoral livelihoods of these nomadic groups. Well-organized and meticulously executed, the camp offered a range of services. From basic consultations and diagnosis to distribution of free medicines and guidance on preventive care, the camp addressed a broad spectrum of medical needs. Adequate arrangements were made for the availability of necessary medical equipment, medicines, and examination facilities. Wide publicity through local networks helped ensure maximum participation.
The veterinary section of the camp played a critical role, offering vaccination, deworming, and treatment for common diseases in cattle, goats, and sheep. As livestock is central to the socio-economic fabric of Gujjars and Bakkarwals, this service was especially appreciated.
Apart from medical treatment, the Army team also conducted awareness sessions for the community members, particularly women and parents, on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, child care, and disease prevention. These informative sessions aimed to raise awareness and empower the community to adopt healthier living practices.
The local population expressed deep gratitude towards the Indian Army for organizing such an initiative in a remote and otherwise neglected area. Smiles, warmth, and heartfelt thanks marked the event, symbolizing the deepening trust between the people and the Army.
This humanitarian effort not only brought immediate relief to hundreds but also reinforced the Indian Army’s image as a force that serves not just in combat but also with compassion.
