The frequent landslides along the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route pose a grave threat to the safety of thousands of devotees and demand urgent attention. The recurring closures of the path not only disrupt the yatra but also endanger the lives of pilgrims, especially during the monsoon months. This is not just a matter of inconvenience; it is a serious safety concern that requires concrete and lasting solutions. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, in collaboration with the Indian Geotechnical Survey team, has made commendable efforts by constructing an alternative battery car route from Adhkuwari to Bhawan. While this new path is operational and designed to ease pilgrim movement, it too is susceptible to landslides. The Board has installed iron sheds and protective structures at sensitive spots, but these measures have not fully mitigated the risks. During the rainy season, the threat remains persistent, particularly on those stretches that experience heavy pilgrim traffic. Past attempts to contain landslides through the expertise of agencies like Tehri Hydro Development Corporation and private pioneers have yielded limited success. Moreover, experts from IIT Roorkee have studied the region, but a detailed analysis to determine the root causes of the recurring landslides is still pending. This scientific assessment is essential to devise sustainable engineering and environmental solutions. The recent landslides in several areas along the route have heightened concerns. With lakhs of devotees coming from across the country, the current state of affairs calls for immediate and strategic intervention. The safety of the yatris cannot be left to chance. While the Shrine Board’s intent is evident, implementation and execution of safety measures must be prompt and scientifically sound. Rather than relying on patchwork solutions, there is a need for a comprehensive master plan focused on slope stabilization, drainage improvement, weather-resistant infrastructure, and real-time monitoring. The importance of making the entire route landslide-resilient cannot be overstated. The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is not just a religious journey; it is a symbol of national faith and devotion. Ensuring the safety of the pilgrims is both a moral and administrative obligation. It is imperative that the concerned authorities rise above procedural delays and act decisively. Only through sustained engineering efforts, backed by expert insights, can we hope to make the Vaishno Devi yatra truly safe and uninterrupted.
