A meeting of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Jammu & Kashmir – Union Territory unit, was held today at the party headquarters in Narwal Pain, Satwari, Jammu. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Charanjeet Chargotra, Vice President of BSP-JK.
During the meeting, the party appreciated the Union Government’s historic decision to conduct a caste-based census across the country. The BSP welcomed this move, emphasizing that the exercise must be conducted in a transparent and time-bound manner, with the final report published in the public domain for accountability and informed policymaking.
This is the first time since Independence that a caste-based census is being conducted, particularly recognizing the OBC (Other Backward Classes) population of the country. The BSP has been consistently demanding such a census since its inception. In contrast, previous governments, particularly those led by the Congress party, have failed to acknowledge this need, thereby denying justice to SCs, STs, OBCs, and minorities. The BSP cautioned the current Union Government not to repeat the past mistakes of misleading the OBC community. The party reaffirmed that it is closely monitoring the process and will not hesitate to expose any injustice or negligence.
The party recalled the relentless efforts of Manyawar Kanshi Ram Ji, who had earlier mobilized the OBC community for the “Jail Bharo Andolan” at Boat Club, New Delhi, demanding a caste-based census and 27% reservation for OBCs. Under the leadership of Bahen Kumari Mayawati Ji (National President, Former CM & MP), BSP continues to uphold the principle of “Jiski Jitni Sankhya Bhari, Utni Uski Hissedari”-a fair share in accordance with population strength.
The BSP-JK reiterated its longstanding demand for 27% reservation for OBCs in the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory and pledged to continue its struggle for the rights and representation of the Bahujan Samaj, especially the OBC community in J&K. Prominent attendees of the meeting included Adv. Sashi Bhushan Thappa, S. Raja Singh, Tilak Raj Bhagat, Haji Mohd (Zone Coordinators), Tarsem Lal (District President, Jammu), Gurdev Singh, Ravi Dutt, Sagar Kumar, among others.
