Jammu Roads in Shambles

The roads of Jammu, once envisioned as arteries of connectivity and development, have today become a symbol of administrative neglect and public suffering. A drive through the city or its adjoining areas is no less than a bumpy ride through a minefield of potholes, broken pavements, and half-dug stretches. The very infrastructure that is supposed to facilitate progress now stands as a glaring reminder of how civic planning and maintenance have taken a backseat. Despite repeated promises from authorities, little has been done to address the deteriorating condition of roads in Jammu. Be it the busy stretches of Talab Tillo, Janipur, Rehari, or the interiors of Gandhi Nagar, the story remains the same—craters instead of roads, dust clouds instead of cleanliness, and traffic chaos instead of smooth commuting. Monsoon rains only worsen the situation, turning potholes into water-filled death traps, endangering the lives of motorists and pedestrians alike. The most disturbing aspect is the lack of accountability. Crores are sanctioned for road repairs and upgradation, yet there is little to show on ground. Temporary patchwork is often passed off as repair work, only for the same roads to break apart with the next spell of rain. The absence of quality checks and regular audits is evident. What’s even more frustrating for the citizens is the apathy shown by the concerned departments—complaints are ignored, deadlines are missed, and blame games continue. Poor roads do not just affect mobility; they also impact the city’s economy, health, and environment. Fuel consumption increases due to slow-moving traffic and repeated braking, vehicles suffer constant wear and tear, and accidents rise at an alarming rate. The elderly, school-going children, and emergency patients bear the brunt of this civic failure daily. It is high time that the administration wakes up to the growing resentment among the people. A long-term and well-monitored road development plan must be implemented without further delay. Contractors must be held accountable, and corrupt practices need to be rooted out. Citizens too must remain vigilant and demand better, not just during elections but throughout the year. Jammu deserves better. The road to development must begin with the roads themselves. Smooth, durable, and well-maintained roads are not a luxury—they are a necessity and a right. The city cannot be allowed to limp through neglect any longer.
