Guru Ravidass, a revered saint and social reformer envisioned a casteless society rooted in equality, compassion, and unity. Born in Varanasi to a family of humble background, he experienced first hand the harsh realities of caste-based discrimination. Despite facing prejudice and social exclusion, Guru Ravidass rose above these limitations through his deep spiritual insight and commitment to social justice.
Balbir Ram Rattan, Guru Ravidass Vishwa Mahapeeth National General Secretary, British Ravidasia Heritage Foundation Indian Branch General Secretary and Begampura Vishwa Mahasabha Member, shared this with Ajay Vaid, Chairman, Swarankar Sangh, Jammu, and Hans Raj Loria, retired senior official from Defence Accounts Department.
Balbir Ram Rattan told them that Guru Ravidass’s teachings had the idea that all human beings are equal in the eyes of God, regardless of their caste, creed, or social status. He rejected the rigid caste hierarchy that plagued society and preached that true devotion and piety had nothing to do with one’s birth but rather with one’s deeds and purity of heart. His message was simple yet profound: spiritual liberation and social equality are inseparable.
His vision of a casteless society was encapsulated in his concept of “Begumpura,” a city without sorrow, pain, or discrimination. In this ideal society, all people would live harmoniously, free from oppression and exploitation. His teachings emphasize values such as humility, compassion, and righteousness. His poetry speaks against social inequality and advocates for a just and compassionate world where every individual has the right to live with dignity.
Despite living in a deeply divided society, Guru Ravidass attracted followers from various social backgrounds, including both upper and lower castes.
His inclusive approach inspired many to rise above societal divisions. His teachings continue to resonate with millions of people across India and the world, serving as a powerful reminder of the need for unity and equality, Balbir said.
