A deputation representing underprivileged communities from the Bahu Assembly constituency met with BJP leader Rajeev Charak to voice their concerns over power connection cuts in their areas, particularly during the ongoing student examinations.
The delegation highlighted that during the election campaign, the government had promised 200 units of free electricity for every households. However, this commitment has yet to be fulfilled, leaving many families struggling. With students in the midst of their exams, the lack of electricity has severely impacted their ability to study.
Residents also reported that electricity department officials have warned of doubled dues if outstanding bills are not cleared by March 31. This has caused significant distress, particularly among widowed and financially vulnerable individuals who are already unable to afford their regular electricity bills.
BJP leader Rajeev Charak assured the delegation that he would escalate their concerns to the party leadership to seek an urgent resolution. He emphasized that while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently reiterated the commitment to providing 200 units of free electricity, this measure remains ineffective unless past dues for below-poverty-line (BPL) families are waived. He urged the government to reinstate power supply immediately and provide financial relief to struggling households, ensuring that students’ education is not disrupted.
Charak further stated that if the government does not take prompt action, a large-scale public movement will be initiated to advocate for the rights of the affected families.
